MR TOM BROWN

Tom Brown is the Editor of dance journal/hk, and the retired Dean of Graduate Education and former Associate Dean of Dance and Head of Modern Dance at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he taught for 29 years.
Brown danced in New York City and Philadelphia in companies of Rudy Perez, Group Motion, and Zero Moving Dance Company, among others, and in works directed by José Limón, Daniel Lewis, and Anna Sokolow. In New York, he directed, choreographed, and danced for his own company, Dance Junction. He has staged over 100 productions from dance scores internationally; choreographed for concert stage, opera, drama, and musical theatre; notated the works of Humphrey, Takei, and Nijinska; and published in journals, anthologies, and conference proceedings.
Brown is Emeritus Chairman of Hong Kong Dance Alliance, Fellow of International Council of Kinetography Laban, member of the International Editorial Board of Research in Dance Education, Editor and contributor of Why They Dance: Narrations of Hong Kong Dance, and contributor to Hong Kong Dance Yearbook 2013-2014. Most recently, he has choreographed for the Musica Viva productions of Rigoletto (2013), Turandot (2014), and Romeo et Juliette (2015). Brown was the Bessie Schönberg Scholar and holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. In 2007, he received the Commendation Certificate from the HKSAR Secretary for Home Affairs “in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development of arts and cultural activities”. In 2015, he was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Dance Awards.
