Since its formation in 2019, the academy has grown from 20 students to close to 300 students. Additionally, Asia Ballet Academy was selected as the Top 1 Ballet Studio in KL & Selangor by TallyPress (2020) and The Fun Empire (2022).

Which is why Psychosynthesis seems particularly pertinent at the heels of a pandemic that upended life as we knew it. The production showcases the struggles of those impacted by the global pandemic, through a collaborative effort of Asia Ballet Academy, Asia Ballet Theatre and KSDC.

With January out of the way, it’s time to welcome the new month. From dance performances to concerts, here are 5 things to do this February!

Be mesmerised by a powerful and dynamic production that places science and multimedia as central in the process. Choreographed by award-winning dancer and choreographer Kenny Shim, Psychosynthesis explores the effects of long periods of isolation through a full-length, fast-paced and impressionistic contemporary dance production. Through movement and dance, this show aims to express and celebrate how the will of humans ultimately triumphs over challenges.

Asia Ballet Academy, located in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, is a specialized ballet school and studio. Focusing on the Vaganova teaching methods, they cultivate students’ technical capabilities in classical ballet while nurturing their artistic growth as dancers. In addition, through their ballet dance lessons, they hope to strengthen pupils’ whole-person development through the education of moral standards and ethical values alongside professional ballet training.

But having seen Psychosynthesis in preview in December last year, I take it all back. Apparently we CAN have it all!

Contemporary dance and technology will measure up equally in Psychosynthesis, a show by Kenny Shim Dance Collective (KSDC) and Asia Ballet Theatre (ABT), which also lights up February at PJPAC.

Asia Ballet Academy uses Vaganova teaching techniques to foster students’ technical proficiency in classical ballet and their aesthetic development as dancers. Their motto, “Perfecting the arts, creating the future” reigns true within their team of professional and trained instructors.

The full-length contemporary dance production, 'Psychosynthesis', presents an abstract pandemic-themed journey which begins with intense turmoil and finally resolves with a sense of hope for the future, despite the unknown.

Psychosynthesis proudly features fully local talent working in tandem with science, multimedia, theatrical lights and setting design to stage a visual and kinaesthetic portrayal of COVID-19 and the repercussions of the global pandemic.

This production is Inspired by the choreographer – Frederick Ashton’s love for the Suffolk countryside. The ballet is set on a farm and tells a story of love between Lise, the daughter of Widow Simone, and Colas, a young farmer.

Asia Ballet Academy will be staging a comedic adaptation of the famous 18th-century French ballet that is sure to entertain all audiences.

La Fille Mal Gardée is the oldest of full length ballets and plays a vital role in the history of ballet evolution as an art form. A total of almost 200 of Asia Ballet Academy’s students ranging from the age of 3 years old to adults will be participating in this harmonious, joyful and merrier dance spectacle of a classical ballet.

This ballet is a wonderful experience that is easy to follow and great for the whole family!

Artistic Director, Ivy Chung strives to create exciting works that marries elements of classical and contemporary dance styles, appealing to wider audiences.

What are the similarities between Mikhail Baryshnikov and Galina Ulanova? Both of them were internationally renowned ballet dancers who were educated according to the Vaganova method, which is still used today by Asia Ballet Academy.

Performance presented this time is not only about rigors ballet technique but also with new choreography enquiries creatively and emotionally.

Performances begin on December 31.

Kayla won 3rd place and received scholarships to the trainee program at National Ballet Academy in Denver, an artistic scholarship at Kirov Academy in Washington D.C., Soki Ballet International in Kenichi Soki, the year-round program at the Asia Ballet Academy in Malaysia, and summer intensive at Ballet Academy West in Salt Lake City, Utah.

When Hong Konger, Ivy Chung started her ballet school in Mont’ Kiara in February 2019, the response was overwhelmingly positive. A ballerina herself, graduating from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts in 1993, Ivy has taken her dance art to Korea and Canada performing and touring for over 10 years before returning to Hong Kong to start her own dance school, Ivy Chung School of Balle.

The Asia Ballet Academy is collaborating with the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida to present this classical ballet with brand new sets, designs and costumes. 'The Fairy Doll' - originally called 'Die Puppenfree' - tells the story of a fairy doll coming to life and whisking children on a whirlwind tour around the world and discovering each country's unique culture.

Performed by the Russian Ballet for over a century since 1903, Die Puppenfee has been given new life. Asia Ballet Academy teams up with Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida to perform The Fairy Doll for local audiences.
